There are 51.8 million vehicles registered in Russia. 84% of these vehicles are cars, Autostat.ru reported.
The population of Russia is estimated at 144 million (by UN), so there are about 277 vehicles per 1000 population. The utilities on some websites give the number of 288 automobiles per 1000 people.
Less than a third of Russians own a car
There are 43.5 million automobiles registered in Russia. The total number of light commercial vehicles is around 4.1 million (8% of the total number of vehicles), plus 3.8 million trucks (7%).
There are 0.4 million buses, which is about 1% of the total number of registered motor vehicles on Russian roads.
Family cars
Traditionally, being a driver was a male profession in Russia, but things are changing.
In a family, a male would be usually the driver, while the wife is getting around by public transport, if they only had one automobile.
- According to an online poll among the visitors of a website for drivers, 14.7% of Russian families have 2 automobiles.
- 3% of families own 3 autos.
- 2% of families possess 4 cars or more.
- 30% of families have 1 car.
However, the poll was conducted among the users of an online portal for people who visited the website for drivers, and still 51.8% of them said they don’t possess a motor vehicle.
Owning an automobile, especially a nice one, is the sign of being well off. What is a nice auto? Any new automobile would be seen as ‘nice’, as most Russians drive vehicles older than 5 years.
In Ukraine, the average age of a car on road is 16 years, we reported recently.
Thus, if the Russian woman you are dating owns a car, she is in the top strata of income-earners in her country. Having an automobile is still a token of being special in Russia. This is why girls from Russia often publish pictures in the driver’s seat in social networks and even on dating sites. It’s there to convey a message.
Car ownership is quite expensive in Russia due to the relatively high cost of fuel and repairs (as compared to wages). The majority of regular citizens get around on public transport, with taxi-buses being the most popular mode of getting around in the large cities.
