Drinking a cup of strong black coffee the first thing in the morning after a bad night sleep isn’t very helpful for the body and may negatively affect blood sugar levels, a recent study revealed.
Coffee in bed? Maybe not
It may seem like a good idea to grab a cup of coffee the first thing in the morning if you didn’t manage a good night sleep, but it’s not a good idea, scientists warn.
UK scientists from the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise and Metabolism looked at this from the perspective of body’s metabolism and discovered that coffee without food in one’s stomach may cause problems with controlling blood sugar levels, which is essential in preventing such conditions as diabetes and cardiovascular problems.
Three groups of participants in the study had either a good or disrupted night sleep and then were given either a sugary drink or coffee in the morning. The group that drank coffee first was also then given a sweet drink 30 minutes later. The amount of calories in the sweet drink was the same as of a typical breakfast.
Researchers noticed that a night of poor sleep followed by an intake of calories didn’t change the level of sugars in blood, as compared to the group that had undisturbed sleep. But if people drank coffee first, then their response to glucose was impaired by about 50%.
It had been previously noticed that caffeine may cause insulin resistance. This study confirmed it may be the case. Thus, the common remedy of grabbing a cup of coffee after sleeping badly may be doing more harm than good.
Researchers advise to first have breakfast before drinking coffee in the morning.
Coffee is now the world’s most popular drink, if you didn’t know. Around two billion cups are consumed daily on the global scale. In the USA 1 in 2 people consume coffee daily. In the UK, 80% of households buy instant coffee.
