Research: Running makes you live longer

Whether you run fast or slow, do it just once a week every second day, there is enough evidence that it is good for your health and longevity.

Reviewers of the British Journal of Sports Medicine analysed 14 studies tracking health of people, some of whom reported being engaged in running or jogging. The studies had been checking health of participants for periods from 5 to 35 years. Over 25,000 deaths were recorded during the time under review.
People who were engaged in running or jogging showed 27% lesser chance of early death compared to people who didn’t run.
- Deaths from cardiovascular decease dropped by 30%.
- Improvement in early deaths from cancer was at the level of 23%.
Even jogging (running at the speed of less than 8 km per hour (6 miles), duration less than 50 minutes, or just once a week — even if participants didn’t particularly exert themselves, it was still good for their health.
Moreover, those who ran more than the recommended amount of exercise per week, didn’t show additional improvement in longevity.
Thus, the researchers concluded that any amount of running is better than none at all.
