Making kids do home chores does nothing to improve their future careers and success in life, a recent study discovered. What does contribute to life success substantially, however, is self-control.
Chores are useless as a tool of making kids successful in life
We all hated home chores as kids, but believe that our own children would benefit greatly from making their beds and unloading the dishwasher. But a recent study by researchers from the University of California couldn’t find any links between kids doing home chores and their later career successes.
Having home chores is believed to contribute to the development of one of the Big 5 psychological traits — conscientiousness. It is a trait similar to self-control, which had been previously confirmed to contribute to career progress.
The academics expected to see some links between children who were assigned certain chores at home and their future career progress, as opposed to the kids who were not doing chores, but there were none.
At the same time, previous findings about self-control being the pivotal factor in progress at work were confirmed.
Kids were assessed several times from the age of 10 to 19, with both young participants and their parents reporting the level of self-control they possessed at the time.
Regardless of the initial level of self-control at the age of 10, children who had a higher level of this trait by the age of 16 were more successful at work.
So, if there is one thing that is for sure important to progressing in one’s career, it’s the ability to manage one’s emotions and responses. That’s the trait that parents need to teach kids, if they want them to succeed in life.
