Education had to swiftly adapt to changes brought by pandemics. Universities in Russia are accepting applications from students this year from 20 June to 17 August.

Universities in Russia offer online applications in response to pandemics

Russian high school graduates just found out how the final yearly exams are going to be organized and when they will be able to apply to universities this year.

Officials informed that applications to universities will be accepted from 20 June to 17 August 2020, Gazeta.ru reported.

The new study year should start as usual on 1 September.

The final tests for graduates of the last year of the high school will start on 3 July. But graduates-to-be will be able to apply to universities before passing the compulsory tests.

University applications will be accepted online to improve safety and health standards. This decision was made already on 8 May.

To post an online application, school leavers have to get an electronic signature, which is a paid service on the government’s website.

• First the person has to pay for the service online and then go through a proper identification procedure in a designated office.
• Alternatively, a specialist can arrive to one’s home to complete the procedure.
• However, the signature will be valid only for 15 months.

The procedure of online application to universities attracted criticism from applicants to creative professions such as singing or acting. They believe it would be impossible to conduct proper tests of such abilities online. Teachers of creative professions agree that live performance in front of an audience of examiners is very different to an online session.

The ministry of culture promised to consider special procedures for applicants to creative professions.

School leavers were wondering about the final exams for a while. At first, it was announced the exams will start on 25 May but then it was changed to 8 June. Later this date was scrapped, but without giving another one.

It is only on 27 May the new date for final tests was set: The exams will start on 3 July.
