WhatsApp is the most popular messenger in Russia, with nearly 6 people out of 10 using it, a recent survey revealed. Viber is also popular, while Skype is slowly losing its appeal.
WhatsApp is the most popular messenger in Russia
A recent survey by Levada rated WhatsApp as the most popular application for calls and messaging.
- The popularity of WhatsApp among Russians increased from 17% in February 2016 to 59% in March 2020, making it the widest ever used app for communication. It grew its user base by 10% since the last year.
- Viber is still utilized by 31% of Russians; the same share as in 2019.
- Messenger VKontakte is loved by 18% of survey participants.
- Telegram is used by 12% of respondents; up from 8% in 2019.
- Skype is utilized by 10% of respondents. It keeps losing popularity (19% in 2018, 14% in 2019).
- Messenger Facebook is used only by 2% of people. It also lost its user base from 5% in 2018.
29% of respondents indicated that they don’t use any messengers. In 2016 there were 65% of respondents who were not utilizing any instant communication means: 2 out of 3 people. Now it’s less than 30%.
Why do Russian women love WhatsApp?

This app doesn’t require any registration or user names, as it is simply connected to your phone number. It’s possible to talk with video or just like you’d normally talk on the phone. It also allows to chat, send photos and videos.
It is easy to join, just download the free app to your phone and you can immediately communicate with any other user. It is also possible to have a group chat with multiple users.
The simplicity of use made it the favourite way of communication for international couples, which used to heavily rely on Skype.
But Skype is not used by 50% less people in Russia than in 2018.
In comparison to that, WhatsApp is used by 6 Russians out of 10.
