Public opinion polls show that emigration sentiment in Ukraine is very high. Which countries are on top of the list for people moving from Ukraine as the desired placed of permanent residence?
Most attractive countries for Ukrainians to emigrate
From the beginning of 2019, 2000 of Ukrainians obtained a permit for residence in the United States. The statement was provided by the Department of Organizational Support of the State Migration Service of Ukraine in response to the inquiry of a UNN reporter.
According to the statistics presented by the department, during the preceding five months, 1996 citizens of Ukraine obtained the authorization for immigration to the USA.
Over the last year, 3,358 citizens left the country permanently in search of a better life abroad, compared to 1,368 in 2014.
This is a sharp increase in numbers. Local authorities point out to such problems as the loss of cultural heritage, economic recession, and a significant reduction in the population of workers in the country, which are sped up by the outward migration of Ukrainians to other countries to work and live there permanently.
However, the USA is not the only direction chosen by locals to settle down abroad.
The list includes such countries as:
- Germany: 411 (1179 in 2018)
- Latvia: 366 (560)
- Russia: 331 (1162)
- Hungary: 174 (404)
- Czech Republic: 151 (153)
- Poland: 146 (191)
- Belarus: 128 (302)
- Moldova: 90 (235)
According to local organizations, every minute two citizens leave their homeland to work abroad. Most of them return home but some manage to stay in the locations where they found jobs. The process was exacerbated by the ability of Ukraine’s women and men to travel to the European Union zone without a visa, which became possible in June 2017.
Are you surprised by the list of destinations as per official statistics? Bear in mind that due to the ability to travel to Europe without visas, people don’t need to obtain an immigration permit before boarding a plane. They can just get there and stay. Going to the U.S., on the other hand, is impossible without the proper paperwork.
