Ukrainians are able to travel to Europe without visas since June 2017. In 2 years, citizens made over 42 million trips to Europe, according to the data of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Obviously, some people went to visit the European Union more than once, otherwise it would be 1 trip per citizen.
How many people from Ukraine visited Europe in 2 years?
According to Finance.ua, the majority of Ukrainians crossed the border to Europe via Poland: over 1 million people. People travel by cars, buses, or trains, which are all popular options of making trips by land.
It is apparent that some people made a few foreign trips while others didn’t cross international borders at all. This is why this discrepancy between the number of trips and people who crossed borders.
Other countries that welcomed Ukrainians to Europe:
- Hungary: 350,000 people
- Romania: 245,000
- Slovakia: 226,000

- 1 million of Ukrainians flew to Europe by planes.
- About 500,000 people used sea vessels for traveling.
- 6 million of passengers were transported via railroads.
Millions of visitors also entered by cars and buses. Traveling by bus is cheap and affordable, which makes this option popular among younger tourists.
More trains and routes
There are plans to increase the number of train routes to Europe, Evgeniy Kravtsov from the Ukrainian railroads confirmed recently.
From these 1.6 million trips made by train, 980,000 people went from Ukraine to Europe and 615,000 in the opposite direction. The number of trips home seems much lower, but people may just choose a different mode of transportation on the way home. Although, obviously, as we know, many Ukrainians look into options of working in Europe (even though they are not allowed to take jobs officially), so the statistics reflects it.
Right now there are 21 trains serving routes to European destinations such as Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Austria, Poland, Warsaw, Slovakia, and Bulgaria.
Statistics:
- In 2016, 62,000 Ukrainians travelled to the European Union by train.
- In 2018, 821,000 people used trains to get to Europe.
In 2019, the number of train trips is likely be higher.
Refusals in entry to the European Union
Not all the citizens of Ukraine who wished to cross the border to the neighbouring countries via the newly granted visa-free regime were able to do it.
In 2018 citizens of Ukraine were refused in entry over 57 thousand times at the border, Finance.ua reported.
During the previous year the number of refusals was lower (37,114), but not the whole 2017 was open for the visa-free regime, only from 11 June.
The majority of refusals were given on the most popular border with Poland (46,184).
Reasons for the refusal in entry
- Absence of the proper documentation, confirming the purpose of the visit and plans for accommodation (22.7 thousand cases).
- Insufficient funds (15.6 thousand cases).
The number of refusals didn’t increase that much as compared with the period before the visa-free regime. For instance, in 2016 Ukrainians got nearly 46,000 refusals in Schengen visa.
Citizens of Russia and Belarus are still required to obtain Schengen visas to travel to Italy, Greece, or Cyprus. However, citizens of Moldova or Georgia can also use the visa waiver program if traveling as tourists.
