Dreams of Russians have changed post-pandemics: Fewer people wish to travel or immigrate, and more people think of paying out debts, finding a better job and becoming successful.

What do Russians dream about?

At the end of 2020 the All Russian Public Opinion Research Centre WCIOM.ru asked locals about their dreams. Only one answer was allowed and it had to include the most important dream.

• The most popular answer that scored 13% in the poll was “I don’t have a dream”. Obviously, there are some people who don’t want to even have any aspirations. Last year only 11% of respondents said they didn’t have a dream.
• The second most popular answer was “health” (one’s own and family members’): 9% (10% in 2019).
• The third most popular answer was “a new home” (apartment or house), for oneself or kids: 8% (10% in 2019).
• Desire to travel locally or abroad isn’t as strong as before: only 5% of respondents said their dream was to travel, as compared to 8% of such answers the year before.
• The dream of having lots of money (prosperity) lost 1/3 of its devotees: 4% (as compared to 6% last year).
• Even the wish to raise successful kids or grandkids isn’t as appealing as before: 4% instead of 7% last year.
• However, twice as many people this year wish to become successful in their own right: 2% instead of 1% in 2019.
• The desire to have a good job also increased: 2% this year as compared to 1% in 2019.
• The same dynamics we see in wanting to pay out debts (2% this year, 1% last year).
• “World peace” which was picked by 4% of respondents in 2019, scored only 2% of devotees at the end of 2020.

12% of respondents decided not to share their dreams with the interviewers, while 8% picked the option “difficult to answer”. You should remember that in Russia it’s believed to be a bad omen to share one’s dreams with someone else, as people are afraid this may jinx it.
