There are many more advantages of online dating than pitfalls, to my mind. As an online dating coach I deal with both aspects and definitely, for every pitfall there is an antidote, while the ultimate benefit is the chance to find The Love of Your Life.
Online dating is a great way to meet people you’d usually never bump into in your daily life
Anyone who experienced the feeling of being in love will attest that it is the ultimate high. 100% natural feeling of walking on the air, this is the goal of many a love-seeker.
Luckily, for lots of online daters their searchers ends in happily ever after, including birth of children and building a great life.
This is why concentrating barely on pitfalls will only shut down opportunities, while thinking how to fix a potential problem will get you the results you want.
Pitfalls/fixes:
- Fake profiles. There are some red flags but overall, if you quickly jump on Skype with video, you will know for sure whom you are talking to. Don’t engage in lengthy chats or emailing.
- People posting old photos. Same recipe: Get on video and see for yourself how they look today.
- People lying about their attributes, age, etc. Typically, users of free online dating sites are more guilty of that as compared to paid portals. In any case, research shows it’s easier for people to lie in writing than face to face. Ask a direct question about things that are important for you, “You said XYZ in your profile, is this right?” and watch their reaction. Most liars will just tell the truth. You will find it out anyway.
- Daters who are married on in relationships. There are some scary statistics about it, saying that 51% of all online dating people are in a relationship, and 11% are married, with only 21% really single. But dating sites that do personal interviews get much better scores in this regard, again, for the same reason that it’s easier to lie in writing than to a person. Follow the same procedure as at #3 and you will be certain the sweet girl or guy you were chatting to is not attached. You can also ask them to walk around their home with the mobile phone as if you were interested to see their place.
There are definitely many more genuine, sincere singles posting ads on Internet portals than there are people who are looking to take advantage of others. Watch out for individuals who aren’t willing to talk to you face to face on video and make sure you spend at least 10-20 minutes conversing, and it’s not just a few seconds of screen time and then the session cuts short (that’s the usual trick of con artists, who have videos of people in front of camera, but are unable to maintain the conversation).
In fact, video chats are the best way to see what the other person is really like. And it’s free when you use Skype or WhatsApp!
Good luck in your dating!
