Introverts are happier extraverted
The first study of this kind to discover whether introverted people would benefit from acting more open and chatty made a definite conclusion: It works!
For a period of 7 days 123 study participants were advised to ‘fake it till you make it’ and act as if they truly were an outgoing and dynamic type.
The same group was then requested to do just the opposite and act introverted for another 7 day period.
Psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky who is a study author believed that acting outgoing as opposed to reserved would improve a person’s feeling of well-being.
It doesn’t matter that the behavior doesn’t feel natural and in fact you may even feel like you are faking it. It still works!
The results of the study confirmed that people are able to change their behaviors and do things that are not typical for them, when it’s a task assigned to them.
People were asked to act more talkative, assertive and spontaneous in the “extraverted” phase of the experiment, and strive to be “quiet”, “reserved”, and “deliberate” during the “introverted” phase.
The participants of the study were given a false information that a previous research found such behavior (pretending to be as instructed — outgoing or withdrawn), to be beneficial for well-being. This was explained to groups doing both tasks.
The participants were getting 3 reminders per week to make sure they remembered the task.
After doing the task of being extraverted, the scores for the feeling of well-being went up. The same people were reporting results on both tasks, and during the introverted week, the rating of well-being went down.
Pretending to be an extravert wasn’t a problem for people. Participants didn’t report any discomfort doing it.
Lyubomirsky pointed out, “It showed that a manipulation to increase extraverted behavior substantially improved well-being. Manipulating personality-relevant behavior over as long as a week may be easier than previously thought, and the effects can be surprisingly powerful.”
Have fun with it!
