Ukrainian women wearing high heels seem to be a pretty regular sight, but this time it sparked media outrage. The reason? The high heels were worn by Ukraine’s female soldiers training for a celebratory army parade in August.
Ukraine’s women to heel up for a military parade
The 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, following the breakdown of the Soviet Union, is to be celebrated on 24 August 2021 with a big parade.
However, there is some controversy about the footgear of female soldiers as shown in recently released photos. The ladies are shown marching in medium-heeled black shoes, and this was met with a lot of comments from the media and politicians.
Male soldiers, obviously, aren’t going to be heeled up, only the ladies. This fact had been called sexist by some politicians and commentators.
According to the sources, ladies had been training initially in boots and were given heels just before the photo shoot.
After the array of comments, the Ukrainian minister of defense Andriy Taran responded with a statement, supporting the idea of a different parade uniform footwear for females. But there is a plan to provide women in the army with a more comfortable type of shoes.
By the local Ukrainian standards, women’s footwear in photos doesn’t even qualify as “high heels” but rather “comfy shoes”.
In western countries, similar type of footgear is worn as uniform by female employees of restaurants or airlines, and is dictated by the corporate rules.
The new model of shoes for female military servants is supposed to have some laces, CNN reported, as well as lower and more comfy heels.
Critics of the heels for females pointed out that such footwear isn’t compatible with military activities, and could even be harmful during the march.
However, the Ukrainian minister of defense believes the issue had been blown out of proportions.
About 57,000 Ukrainian women serve in the country’s military.
