A recent survey revealed what Russian wives do in their spare time. 3 out of 4 women who are in a relationship are taking care of the household, kids, and doing other home chores when they are at home. The most popular things that married women do for fun is watching TV and reading books.
What Russian wives do in their spare time (as reported by their husbands)
For the Women’s Day 8 March, WCIOM, the All Russian Public Opinion Research Centre, asked men who are in relationships about their partners.
One thing they wanted to know was how the wives were spending their spare time.
According to Russian men, 72% of married ladies are taking care of the household, kids and dacha (the countryside home many people in Russia own, where they grow vegetables and berries). This is #1 activity that their partners typically do.
Other activities married females are involved in weren’t as unified:
- Watching TV, listening to radio: 26%
- Reading books: 19%
- Simply relaxing: 18%
- Playing computer games, surfing Internet: 17%
- Inviting friends over or visiting them: 17%
- Hobbies (handiwork, crafts, photography): 16%
- Walking, spending time outdoors: 15%
- Gym, fitness: 9%
- Education, upgrading qualifications: 9%
- Theatres: 8%

- Going to movies: 8%
How much spare time do Russian wives have daily?
- 33% of Russian women have 2-3 hours for themselves during weekdays (Monday to Friday). 29% of them have 4 hours or more during weekdays, while 16% of wives have nearly all time for themselves, and 14% of partners can only spend 1 hour or less as they please.
- Even on weekends, 7% of married women have less than 1 hour for themselves. 31% of respondents said their partners can use 4-7 hours for themselves, while 17% of wives have 4-7 hours in their disposal. The same share of ladies (17%) can spend 2-3 hours as they please. 19% of lucky ladies can do what they want with their time.
What do women say about their fun pursuits?
However, when women were asked about the things they usually do at home, a rather different picture emerged.
- Watching TV, listening to radio: 39%
- Reading books: 32%
- Inviting friends over or visiting them: 31%
- Hobbies (handiwork, crafts, photography): 28%
- Walking, spending time outdoors: 27%
- Playing computer games, surfing Internet: 18%
- Reading magazines, newspapers: 15%
- Simply relaxing: 14%
- Gym, fitness: 12%
- Theatres: 11%
- Going to movies: 10%
- Education, upgrading qualifications: 8%
Only 63% of women said they were taking care of the household and kids, as compared with 72% of men. Possibly, ladies don’t even think of that as something special they do, but rather prefer to talk about other interests in life. This is why other activities got a boost.
Now you know what a typical schedule married women in Russia have in their families and what activities they prefer to be involved in.
