The majority of Russians who make New Year resolution manage to realize them, a recent poll revealed. However, only 1 in 3 people make resolutions in Russia.

1 in 3 Russians make New Year resolutions and most people manage to keep them

The start of the New Year is always a barrier that stimulates many of us to strive to lead a better life. People in Russia, too, are following the trend to make promises to themselves to become healthier, earn more money, give up smoking, and so on.

However, a recent WCIOM survey revealed that only 1 in 3 people (34%) usually make such resolutions, while 64% of respondents indicated they don’t normally do it.

• The share of people making New Year resolutions is higher among young adults aged 25-34: 1 in 2 is doing it (49%).
• In groups 18-24 and 35-44 one in three people sets goals for the year (37% and 36%, respectively).
• The lowest share of goal-setters are in the group 60+: Only 1 in 4 does it (25%).

69% of these people who usually sets goals for the 12 months ahead manage to realize them. Only 1 in 4 (24%) said they usually don’t fulfill their plans.

Top-10 most popular goals among Russians in 2020

While in western countries the most popular New Year resolutions are to start exercising or lose weight, Russians put family first.

1. #1 resolution for 2020 in Russia is to spend more time with family (5%).
2. Taking care of one’s health is in the second place (4%).
3. Earning more money or starting to make savings scored the third position (3%).
4. 3% of Russians intend to start exercising.
5. Change jobs (find a job): 3%.
6. Give up smoking: 3%.
7. 3% of respondents simply plan to live better.
8. Studying is in plans of 2% of respondents.
9. Buying a home is on the list of 2% of survey takers.
10. Travelling more or taking a trip is in plans of 2% of respondents.

Apparently, plans of survey participants were so diverse, it was hard to group them from the answers that researchers received. Only the answers that scored over 2% were included in the rating.

Other categories that scored just under the top-10 were renovating home and working more. The last task in the rating that made it on the lists of over 2% of respondents is “simply survive till the next year”.

Surprisingly, 57% of people who usually make resolutions (only they were asked about details of their plans for 2020) answered they do not intend to set goals for this year. Is it apathy or they simply didn’t want to share their plans, believing in the old Russian superstition that you shouldn’t share your dreams or they won’t come true?
