Russians aren’t kissing friends as much as before when they meet. Pandemics changed people’s habits and only 1 in 4 people in Russia is kissing friends as a greeting. In 2019, 40% of locals used this type of greeting.
Fewer kisses and smiles in 2020
According to a recent survey by WCIOM, the share of people in Russia who kiss each other when they meet dropped from 40% (2019) to 27% this year (2020), while the share of people who say they never kiss as a greeting doubled.
Smiling also became a precious commodity: only 34% of respondents said they smile when seeing their friends and acquaintances vs. 41% of participants last year.
WHO announced the world went into pandemics on 11 March 2020. Things changed a lot since then.
Last year nearly half of Russian respondents said they use kisses as a form of greeting. This year only 36% said the same thing.
In total, twice as many participants stated in 2020 that they never kiss friends or family members as a greeting as compared to the last year: 22% of men and 11% of women.
Handshakes, hugs, and even nods are in decline as well:
- Handshakes: Drop from 50% (2019) to 38% (2020)
- Hugs: Drop from 55% (2019) to 42% (2020)
- Nods: Drop from 23% (2019) to 17% (2020)
However, words are used to greet each other as often as before (56% in 2019, 57% in 2020).
Differences in how men and women greet each other in Russia
Guys most often shake hands with each other (72% of respondents do it when meeting friends and 71% of participants when greeting colleagues).
Ladies prefer to greet friends by words (63% do it with friends and 72% do it with colleagues). Females also like to use smile (46% and 39% accordingly).
In general, in 2019 49% of Russian respondents said they often kiss friends or acquaintances when they meet, part or just as an expression of their feelings. In 2020, only 36% of participants stated that (26% of men and 43% of women). All in all, even this year Russian women use kisses more often socially or as an expression of feelings.
