Babies born during the pandemic in Moscow most always were getting names Alexander (for boys) and Sofia (for girls).
Trends for baby names in Moscow, Russia, in April 2020
You’d think that the new strangle world we found ourselves in for a few weeks would prompt some changes to trends in baby names, but this wasn’t the case, TVZvezda reported.
The department of registrations (ZAGS) of Moscow revealed the list of popular baby names that parents chose for their new arrivals, which didn’t show much change to the trends of the last year.
Residents of Moscow still stick to the same ideas as before.
- Sofia: 107 newborn girls got this name.
- Alexander: 93 baby boys got this name.
Michael was second most popular name for the boys and Polina for girls.
Other trendy names for girls:
- Anna: 69
- Alice: 69
- Maria: 64
Parents of boys pick these names most often:
- Maxim: 82
- Mark: 71
- Artyom: 68
Some parents were original. In April 3 girls were registered as “Luna”. There are also now a baby Theresa (not a usual Russian name), Almaz (“diamond”), Vishnya (“cherry”), and Olimpina.
Among unusual male registrations are Svetozar, Yaropol, and Yaromir, all three sound like ancient-style Russian names. There are also Stephan, Oliver (not traditional names for Russia), as well as Mars and May.
