Many people who reach the top ranks are strategic in their thinking. This allows them to manage challenges more effectively and achieve goals in the situations where others fail.

Patricia Chen, an assistant professor of the Department of Psychology at the National University of Singapore, points out that the ability to look for answers to the question, “How else can I do this? Is there a better way of doing this?” is the key to being effective in the face of challenges.

To review how strategic mindset benefits goal achievement, scientists conducted a series of tests among over 800 students and working adults in the USA, with the help of psychologists from Stanford University.

The scientists also gave a positive answer to the question whether a strategic mindset can be taught. In one test, some people were trained in implementing more strategic approach to task-solving, with a follow-up request to solve a task that was unknown to them in a shortest possible time. People who were taught to think strategically solved it faster than the ones who weren’t trained, because their solutions were more effective to achieving the outcome.

The scientists also noticed that people who were trained in the strategic mindset were likely to practice the task before performing more often. So, willingness to practice is also influence by strategic thinking.

How does the strategic mindset work?

As Carol Dweck, psychologist from Stanford University, pointed out, there are certain “key points in any challenging pursuit that require people to step back and come up with new strategies”. People who tend to ask themselves the right questions are able to do that.

• What are the things that I can do to help myself to do it?
• Is it possible to do this even better?

In cases where things aren’t going well, it’s worth answering these questions:

• Is there a way of doing it differently?
• What approach may work better than what I have been doing?
