2 out of 3 Russians believe that clothes do make the man, a recent poll discovered. In a survey by the All Russian Public Opinion Research Centre 62% of respondents stated they feel that success in modern Russia does depend on the person’s appearance.
Clothes make the man
If westerners believe that manners make the man, Russians think it’s clothes. Even in our time!
The Russian saying “Po odezhke vstrechayut, po umu provozhayut” doesn’t have the exact equivalentin English but can be translated in the way that when people see you for the first time, they judge you by your clothes, but when they part with you, they evaluate you by your intelligence.
Nowhere in the equation it mentions personal qualities or manners, but only the intellectual ability of the mind. But is this true in the modern Russia?
In fact, most locals still feel it holds true. Not only 77% (3 out of 4) Russians said they agree with the proverbial statement about people judging you by clothes at first, but also 62% of the respondents believe that success in life depends on the way the person looks.
In addition, 42% of survey participants stated that people nowadays care about their looks more than before, while 34% of users said it was the same as some time ago. Only 18% or 1 in 5 participants believe people today care less about the way they look.
There is even an opinion that people both meet and part with others judging them by looks in general and clothes foremost. In other words, it’s what shows on the surface that counts in modern Russia.
There are others who would disagree and say it’s totally not true, and inner qualities are more important. But even judging by the success of men’s profiles on our dating site Elenasmodels.com, guys in suit and ties are definitely getting more attentions from pretty girls than men in board shorts and T-shirts.
It’s national peculiarity, that’s it. Might just as well use it to your advantage!
