Russian women are known for their strong family values, but at the same time Russia is the country with one of the highest divorce rates in the world. How dedicated are women of Russia in a relationship?

How long do people usually stay in relationships in Russia?

“Getting married” in Russia is expressed by the phrase “to create a family”, which is the words you may have often seen in profiles of Russian women on Elenasmodels.com.

The word for “spouse” is often replaced by “the second half”, which is a standard expression, even used by interviewers in sociological polling.

Recently WCIOM, the All Russian Public Opinion Research Centre, asked local respondents about their second halves, whether they had one or not, and only 25% said they didn’t. So, the rest, we can assume, were in stable relationships.

Now it’s becoming interesting!

The researchers also asked about the length of the relationship.

• 94% of all respondents were in a relationship for longer than 1 year.
• Even among 18-24-year-olds the share of people who’d been together for over 12 months was 79% (4 out of 5).
• In the age group 25-34, 90% of people were together for over a year.
• The highest share of long-term relationships was among 35-44-year-olds: 98%.
• It drops slightly in among the group 45-59 (97%) and even more for people aged 60+ (95%).

Just bear in mind that the phrase “second half” is basically reserved for spouses, not just romantic partners. Of course, some people view their de facto partners are the “second half”. Others in the same situation may not even see themselves as being in a committed partnership.

How dedicated to a relationship are Russians?

The average length of a partnership across all ages was 21 years. That’s pretty long!

Of course, it varies greatly depending on the age.

• 18-24: 4 years.
• 25-34: 8 years.
• 35-44: 13 years.
• 45-59: 25 years.
• 60+: 39 years.

Interestingly enough, in the detailed tables for this poll WCIOM doesn’t provide percentages for males and females separately, which they sometimes do. It is a know anomaly in sociological research that there are usually 10% more married females than males who admit having a spouse. The explanation is that women consider themselves married if they are in a de facto partnership, while males often see themselves as single. This is typical for sociological research all over the world, including standard census polling.

Still, 75% of respondents who say they have a second half, display the average length of relationship of 21 years — it’s pretty impressive!
