Russians are fond of week-long holidays, which are scheduled twice a year: From 1 January and 1 May. This year people in Russia take 9 days off in the first two weeks of May: 1-5 May and 9-12 May. The first break is around “The Day of Spring and Labour” 1 May and the second break for the Victory Day 9 May.
What people in Russia plan to do during May holidays?
If you are chatting to a pretty Russian woman, keep in mind the dates when she will be able to spend more time with you — either online or even in person! A trip to meet each other for a few days could be on the card if you live not too far away and able to take time off work. Even if this is not possible, online romances have their advantages — get on Skype or WhatsApp and learn more about each other, that’s the perfect time to schedule a video date.
All other people in Russia are going to do something during these dates, with the majority of them planning to stay at home (63%), according to a recent survey.
The most popular thing to do among locals is to go to dacha — the gardening season is starting. (Related: What is dacha?)
Only 4% of people are planning to go overseas and 6% think about visiting another city within Russia.
So, if the lady you are chatting to is not at home, you know where she is — at the dacha! Unless, of course, she lives in another country. For example, there are plenty of Russian women living in Europe.
Holiday dreams
Where would Russia’s residents go if they could? WCIOM asked them about dreams they would wish to realize.
The most popular option is to take a trip abroad (5%). Trips in general are what locals would like to do.
- To the Black Sea: 4%
- To Crimea: 4%
- Trip within the Russian Federation: 4%
- To the countryside/dacha: 2%
- Trip somewhere (no certain place): 2%
Only 1% of respondents remembered the theatre, which Russian ladies insist is their choice of a time well spent. While they keep talking up the theatre, it appears to be more talk than action. It’s appropriate to “love theatre”, it’s believed to be a desirable entertainment pursuit. But truth is, if they could, they’d rather travel.

May holidays are really a great reason to go somewhere to relax. Other countries or Islands are always a good option. You can spend more time with your family, loved one or friends. There is also an opportunity to meet new people, cultures, food. This is huge. I advise.

My May holidays are not so long – only two days. First of all I would like to sleep and spend much time on the sofa, I have been working without any days-off for a long time. And I will be with my parents and meet my friends. And go for a walk. It is cool.
