Blogging is very popular in Russia and half of Russians follow one or more bloggers, a recent survey revealed.

Russian bloggers: How popular are they?

The All Russian Public Opinion Research Centre WCIOM.ru asked locals about their views on bloggers and blogging. 46% of respondents read blogs or follow some YouTube channels. In 2017 only 34% of people were following bloggers.

Among people aged 18-24, 63% of respondents follow some blogs. In the age groups 25-34 and 35-44 50% or 1 in 2 follows blogs online.

Only people using Internet were asked about it, so the share of such interested parties among general population is even lower.

• When asked about the purpose of why bloggers invest their time and efforts in sharing their views and information, most respondents think it’s to make money (64%).
• 40% of users think they bloggers are doing it to attract attention to themselves.
• 32% of respondents agree that people blog to share information and knowledge.
• 18% of respondents think it’s simply fashionable to be a blogger.
• 16% of locals think that communicating with other people is the reason why bloggers publish their blogs, while further 15% of users believe it’s to express one’s creativity.

The level of trust to bloggers in Russia isn’t too high: only 27% of respondents feel that bloggers are honest. 77% of survey participants think that bloggers jump on hot and scandalous topics to gain popularity.
Only 23% of survey takers purchased something on advice of a blogger, although 46% of users said they would take in consideration the opinion of a blogger they watch or read, if they were choosing some product. However, 51% of respondents are confident that the opinion of blogger they watch would make no difference to their desire to buy a product.

Which platforms are the most popular?

Among those who purchased something on advice of a blogger, most people got tips from YouTube.

• VKontakte: 14%
• Telegram: 8%
• Facebook: 4%
• Odnoklassniki: 2%
• Live Journal: 2%
• TikTok: 1%
• WhatsApp: 0.3%

Over half of Russians think that blogging is just a fad and it won’t be in demand in the future. However, 35% of locals think that blogger is the profession of the future. Among the group aged 18-24, 50% of respondents believe that bloggers will remain popular and needed.

Only 14% of respondents would like their kids or grandkids to become bloggers, while 75% of survey takers wouldn’t want this to happen.
