Sugary drinks have long been linked to increased risk of cardiovascular conditions, but artificially sweetened drinks seem to be just as bad for your health.
Sugary and artificially sweetened drinks are both linked to ill heart health
Cardiovascular conditions are the leading cause of mortality in the world, and sweetened drinks have been linked to ill heart health for years.
Now the researchers from the American College of Cardiology say that drinks that contain artificial sweeteners aren’t any better, based on data of over 100 thousand participants.
The participants had to fill in detailed questionnaires about their meals and drinks every 6 months.
Sugary drinks (the ones containing 5% of sugar or higher) as well as the ones that contained artificial sweeteners were both identified in the study and looked at from the point of view of links to heart conditions.
The scientists then looked at records of conditions such as stroke, heart attack, acute coronary syndrome, and others, which had been recorded during 10 years from 2009 to 2019.
Over 1,300 people had some of these issues during the last seven years of the review (cases during the first 3 years were excluded as it was hard to propose cause and effect link).
When compared, both groups, the one that consumed sugary drinks as well as those who were opting for sweetened artificially had a higher occurrence rate in regard to such conditions.
After careful consideration, the researchers believe that artificial sweeteners may not be a healthy substitute for sugars in drinks. However, the scientists believe further investigation is warranted to confirm the link and look deeper into the root causes.
