Trees and nature strips improve people’s life satisfaction and healthy lifespan, scientists point out. Beautiful nature encourages people to take longer walks and spend more time outdoors
How urbanites improve their health through nature
Recent pandemics restrictions taught us to value things that we used to take for granted. Going out and having a walk transformed into one of our greatest delights. But even without the pandemics, city dwellers could have much more green spaces, enjoy their beauty, and benefit from various outdoor activities.
Scientists from the Stanford University decided to dig deeper into the “greenish problem”. They set to work out methods that will equip urban planners with new solutions and tools and enable them to oil the wheels of “green intervention”, ScienceDaily.com reported.
Beautiful nature promotes healthy activities
As city dwellers, we all feel the lack of nature. We sense how much more cheerful and enjoyable to walk, jog or cycle along the vegetated pavements. Even a short stroll along the green street makes you more active and happier. Flora and vegetation support not only your physical and emotional but also cognitive wellbeing.
With this in mind, the group of the university scholars led by post-doctoral researcher Roy Remme set to analyze the issue and fill in the gaps in urban planning aiming to make it more sustainable and eco-friendlier. The result of their work was a Natural Capital Project that has proved the idea of a strong correlation between greenspace expansion, physical activity, and human health.
Scientists have built a research framework to implement technological solutions into urban design projects. A part of their study was dedicated to the creation of software that helps urban planners and municipal authorities wisely use every inch of downtown and suburban areas. Through its use, the introduction of all-around green areas into our cities’ maps will become much quicker and easier.
Science-based city development
Scientists put high hopes onto their computer program that can assess the urban greenspace situation and offer bulks of solutions to the typical city problems like ecology and climate change.
“Proximity to nature and ever-present vegetation provides countless benefits to the urbanites”, said G. Daily, one of the research participants.
“Our study has confirmed the assumption that city green spots facilitate the residents’ physical activity, their metabolism, and reduce health-associated risks such as dementia and cancer”.
The research has also demonstrated that the building of healthy and sustainable communities is hardly possible without the help of projects based on scientific findings. Looking for new tools like the one created in the course of this study would facilitate the solution of the greenish problem. Scientists believe that their work has made a useful contribution to the idea of the city development in a way that greatly improves its residents’ living conditions and health.
