Camping and fishing gear is flying off the shelves of Russian stores, with locals opting for inexpensive holidays in the woods instead of overseas trips.

2020 changed the world, anyone would agree on that. Russians who used to love trips abroad are forced to find local options this year. Camping and fishing are gaining traction, according to Lenta.ru.
In June 2020 Russians purchased 14% more tents than a year before. In July they were buying tents 11% more often than at the same time during the previous year. However, the value of the average check dropped by 5%; Russians are more frugal now than before, IZ.ru reported.
Demand for sleeping bags was up by 17% in July. Sales of hiking rucksacks also picked up by 13%. The average For sleeping bags and rucksacks Russians paid more this year than in 2019, by 6% and 9% respectively.
Picnic tables are even more popular: in June the demand jumped by 36% and in July by whopping 54%. People are paying 15% more for picnic tables this year.
At the same time, people stopped buying suitcases. In June the demand dropped by 80% as compared to the previous year. The situation improved in July, but there still was a drop by 44% to the numbers of 2019. Buyers also purchase cheaper suitcases than a year before; there was a drop by 26% in the value of an average pay check.
Altogether sales of tourist goods went up substantially, by 2.5 times.
Fishing gear is selling exceptionally well; sales are up 400% on fishing rods. Other fishing goods recorded 500-700% hike in popularity.
Not only individual tourism is safer, but also hotels and resorts cannot accommodate the same amount of people as before because of restrictions and have to operate at 30-50% capacity.
Thus, Russian women and men opt for camping and trekking, using the chance to change the scenery and relax among nature.
