People who consume lots of vegetables and fruit are less stressed, scientists discovered. Fruit and vegetables are high in useful nutrients, helping to reduce inflammation and oxidation, making people calmer.
Not just health but also peace, that’s what eating vegies gives you
A new study by Edith Cowan University (ECU) has shown that if you follow a diet based on fruit and vegetables, you can get rid of a lot of stress.
To maintain the health of the nervous system, it is necessary to reduce the load on the digestive organs, that is, to eat regularly and in small portions. Eat in a comfortable environment, enjoy food, and drink plenty of fluids.
With various ailments from the nervous system, doctors advise to limit the intake of animal protein and fat in the diet, and instead to give preference to foods with a high content of vitamins and liquids. If the nervous system is disrupted, vegetables and fruits with coarse fiber are especially useful to return to a healthy balance. Spicy, salty foods, foods that are difficult to digest should be excluded.
Scientists have studied the relationship between consumption of fruit, vegetables, and stress indicators. About 8,600 Australians between the ages of 25 and 91 took part in the study.
When scientists reviewed the scores, they discovered that people who consumed about 500 grams of vegetables and fruits daily had 10% lower stress levels than those who ate 230 grams or less.
The World Health Organization has established that every day the consumption of fruit and vegetables should be not less than 400 grams.
Lead researcher Simone Radavelli-Bagatini, PhD, from the ECU Institute for Nutrition Research, said the study points out towards the link between mental well-being and a diet rich in vegies and fruit.
“Our experts have found that those people who lead such a healthy lifestyle, get into stressful situations much less often than those who do not include such healthy foods in the diet. This is proof that the key role goes to the right diet, and then there will be mental well-being in the near future.”
Does unhealthy eating contribute to mental health crisis?
It is worth noting that in Australia unhealthy eating is becoming an increasingly serious problem, and in general around the world.
Mental health becomes an issue for many people. One in two Australians has problems throughout many stages of life. Approximately 1 in 10 people has a mental health disorder.
Raddavelli-Bagatini believes that a moderate amount of stress is even beneficial, but if it lasts long enough, it can have a detrimental effect on the body.
“Due to prolonged and unmanageable stress, many physical illnesses can appear. For example, diabetes, depression, anxiety and heart disease. ”
The link between food and mood
Despite the fact that many still do not understand how fruit and vegetables are associated with mental health, the expert pointed out that key nutrients derived from plants are the key.
Vegetables and fruit are full of vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, and carotenoids. They help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Accordingly, mental health improves.
This is why vegies, berries, and fruit are important to feel calm and content with life.
