Most Ukrainians spend some time in traffic jams, a recent poll suggests. In a recent online poll, 89% of participants indicated they are losing some time daily because of slow movement while driving.
How bad is traffic in Ukraine?
Larger cities would be obviously busier than small towns, but according to results of a recent poll by Segodnya, only 12% of their online readers don’t spend any time in traffic jams.
11% of respondents indicated they are wasting over 2 hours daily just standing on roads. The most popular answer was “30-60 minutes”: Over 33% of respondents ticked this option.
The poll wasn’t linked to a specific location.
1 in 4 locals doesn’t waste more than 30 minutes on roads, while nearly 20% of survey participants said they are losing 1-2 hours because of busy roads.
Ukrainians drive on the right side of the road, just like the rest of European Union, except the Great Britain (which on its way to leave the EU, following the famous referendum). In UK motorists drive on the left side of the road.
Buying cheap cars in Europe and bringing them to Ukraine is a popular option for local motoring enthusiasts. It’s allowed to drive a car with European number plates into the country, but to change the registration to Ukrainian costs money. This is why a lot of drivers delay changing the registration and you may see a lot of cars with EU number plates on local motorways.
In the centre of Kyiv (Kiev), jams became so bad that the city council considers closing it for the transit traffic or charging every vehicle a fee for entering. So far, it hasn’t happened, but it probably will become a reality one day.
