Over half of Ukrainians feel they became poorer in 2020, according to a recent poll by the centre of social monitoring.
Ukrainians feel poorer
Officially, income of Ukrainians went up by 7% in July-September 2020, as compared to the same period of 2019, according to Ukrstat, Finance.ua reported.
But according to a recent poll, 51.8% of Ukrainian respondents feel that in 2020 they became poorer. 36.3% of respondents stated their financial situation hadn’t changed and only 8% of participants said their finances improved.
Residents of western regions of Ukraine and people over the age of 50 were less likely to feel their financial situation improved during the past year. Younger respondents (under 40 years) and residents of central regions were more likely to experience improvement in their finances.
2 out of 3 people (62%) feel that Ukraine’s economy is worse off after 2020, while 1 in 4 (23.8%) don’t feel there was any change. Only 7% of participants feel the economic situation in Ukraine improved during the last year.
On average, Ukrainians evaluated 2020 as “unsatisfactory”: The year scored 2.3 out of 5 points.
Ukrainian schools used to use a 5-point system, in which 1 and 2 points meant unsatisfactory, 3 meant poor, 4 meant good, and 5 meant excellent.
- 4% of respondents gave only 1 point to 2020.
- 5% of participants gave it 2 points.
- 5% of users scored it as “3”.
- 6% of people scored it as “4” (good).
- 4% of users gave 2020 the highest mark “5” (excellent).
Most often when asked what kind of positive things happened in 2020, Ukrainians mentioned their health. Work and relaxation also were named in the list of positive things. However, 21.7% of respondents feel there was nothing positive in 2020.
Nearly 35% of Ukrainians hope their life will become better in 2021, while 30% feel that nothing is going to change.
By comparison, 60% of Russians hope that 2021 will be better than the previous year.
