Native Americans came from the Russian Siberia. This is the conclusion of archaeologists who discovered human remains in Siberia, Russia, which are genetically linked to modern time Native Americans.
Americans came from Russia
The exciting twist of humans travelling in ancient times was just uncovered by archaeologists who discovered two children’s milk teeth on a site in North Eastern Siberia. The group lived there during the times of Ice Age and had been previously unknown to scientists.
Siberia is an extremely cold place, this is why so many artefacts survived to our times and can be found.
This is the first time human remains linked to Native Americans are discovered outside the territory of the United States.
Professor Eske Willerslev from Cambridge was the head of the expedition that made the sensational discovery.
The previously unknown group of humans was named ‘Ancient North Siberians’.
It is ‘a significant part of human history’, according to the excited researchers who, no doubt, had to endure some pretty harsh conditions, not only due to the cold, but simply lack of utilities and even Internet. But such is the job of an archaeologist. The conditions they have to work in are rather close to how our remote ancestors had to live.
Ancient DNA
The site near Yana River, known as Yana Rhinoceros Horn Site (RHS), was initially discovered in 2001. It took 18 years to uncover the pretty important proof of existence of a formerly unknown group of humans.
Most of the site included animal bones. There was also some stone tools found, along with other evidence of human presence.
The 2 human teeth (children’s milk teeth) were the only human remains that the team of archaeologists was able to uncover in 18 years.
According to the report, Ancient North Siberians were living there about 31,000 years ago. They hunted now extinct woolly mammoths and woolly rhinoceroses.
The newly discovered ancestors of Native Americans existed about the same time as the forefathers of modern Asians and Europeans. According to scientists, it is likely large regions of the Europe-Asia continent were inhabited by different groups that formed different ethnic groups present today on our Earth.
The site’s population is estimated by scholars as about 40 individuals, with a localised group of humans totalling 5 hundred.
What is interesting, there is no evidence of inbreeding with Neanderthals, which is present in all modern humans.
Genetic expertise showed that Ancient North Siberians were closer to Europeans than Asians. This is why the scholars believe the newly discovered humans might have travelled from the Western Eurasia to Siberia.
The missing link
According to Dr Martin Sikora, a specialist in GeoGenetics and the first author of the study, the ancient humans managed to adapt to harsh environments and were “highly mobile”.
The idea of Native Americans migrating from Siberia via Alaska, when the continents were still linked by a land, is not new. The land bridge between continents disappeared during the last Ice Age.
The new findings change not only the whole scientific idea about the ancient Siberia, but also the whole history of humankind.
The Ancient North Siberians are the “missing link” to understand where the Native Americans came from.
