Scientists found an answer to one of the biggest questions of our times: How to become happier? Make resolutions that don’t just make you happier, but also make the world a better place.
Strive to make the word a better place and become happier
International expert on motivation Richard Ryan, who is also a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, pointed out that most people aren’t successful in keeping their New Year’s resolutions and in general plans to achieve certain goals.
The most satisfying, however, is to find goals that also help others. Thinking of how to give to others also helps one’s own sense of well-being.
Ryan is one of co-founders of the self-determination theory (SDT) that is a study of human personality and motivation, well regarded in the modern behavioural psychology. The theory was developed during the last 40 years of research and studies and based on the idea that humans tend to choose ways that are effective.
3 basic human psychological needs
According to STD, there are 3 basic needs that every human is motivated by:
- The need for autonomy: Desire to find personal value and do what one wants.
- Competence: Have a sense achievement and effectiveness.
- Relatedness: Have a connection to others though one’s vocation.
As such, doing something that helps others satisfies all the three basic psychological needs, which will make you happier. Studies demonstrate that having such motivation isn’t just good for the world, but also for the individual setting such a task.
