Less than 19% of Ukrainians have enough money to last for up to 6 months without income, a recent survey revealed. The quarantine in Ukraine was imposed in mid-March and has been extended until mid-May.
No money but holding on
The most popular answer in the survey by Segodnya.ua asking how long will people last with the money they have, was “about a month”: Over 30% of respondents chose this answer.
- 17% of participants said they had no money but were holding on, while further 8% stated they only had enough cash to last a few days.
- 10% of users would last a week.
- Altogether it showed that 1 in 3 people had no money for another week of quarantine, which was scheduled to last 6 more weeks.
- Altogether, 4 out 5 Ukrainians cannot last more than a month on quarantine without income.
The survey was conducted among online users of the portal. People using Internet in Ukraine and reading news online tend to be slightly better off than the general population.
Pensioners, who are the most vulnerable group among citizens of Ukraine, rarely read news online and prefer watching TV. So, we can assume the results are fairly optimistic, compared to the actual picture.
In Ukraine, pensioners whose pensions are under 5,000 hryvnia (USD 180) are getting a one-time financial assistance due to the quarantine in the size of 1,000 hryvnia (USD 36), KP.ua reported.
Another survey revealed that 43% of people in Ukraine are more scared to be left without money than get infected by the virus.
Although there is another component: Locals living in villages have enough home-grown food, as well as fresh produce from nearby farms of friends and family members that they can rely upon. There is a sizable population in the country that is oriented on production of food: grains, vegetables, and fruit. However, spring is the time when supplies are running low.

What about Russia on Quarantine? Do you have the statistics? A friend there and a couple girls from this site said their economy is collapsing. I was just curious if the percentages are similar or totally different.
Blake, Russia is a greatly censored state. We are monitoring the media but so far there hasn’t been anything worth publishing, just the usual propaganda. Russia hasn’t even announced a formal quarantine, but only requested people to self-isolate and told them they are on holidays and employers should pay (of course, they don’t, unless people are working for the government). It was done 2 weeks later than Ukraine did it.
A university teacher from Kiev wrote me, that she no longer receives pay, but continues to teach online, at the insistence of the administration. They claim there is no money; the country is broke …
And so, they will simply let everyone in the cities starve?
