Having control over one’s emotions may become even more important now that scientists discovered a way to tell a person’s emotional state without the need for a lie detector. People’s breathing and heartbeat are effectively recorded and decoded wirelessly with the help of radio waves, analysed by artificial intelligence.
Wireless lie detector isn’t a myth anymore
British scientists effectively measured people’s breathing patterns and heartbeat with the help of harmless radio waves, similar to Wi-Fi signal or radars, decoding a person’s emotional state.
This approach is used in a traditional lie detector, which requires multiple sensors attached to a person’s body. The new technology based on deep learning algorithms and the use of AI allows to ditch the bulky sensors and detect a person’s emotional state without them even knowing.
While it would be extremely useful in health care and communication between robots and humans, there are also potential uses raising ethical concerns.
For instance, there is a possibility of analysing emotions within a large group of people in a large room on an individual basis.
- In the study, scientists asked people to watch videos that were known to elicit strong emotional response of joy, sadness, pleasure, or anger.
- The resulting data was analysed by AI with the help of deep learning algorithms. These algorithms are similar to the ones used by humans when finding links and connections between various layers of information.
Traditionally, people gather information about one’s emotional state via visual cues such as eye movements, gestures, facial expressions, etc. Speech patterns and verbal cues also give away a lot.
However, in the absence of these obvious cues, it was hard for an untrained observer to find out what the person was really feeling. Now an individual’s emotion can be detected by AI with the help of simple radio signals, which, once reflected, depict slight movements caused by breathing and heartbeat, and can be quickly analysed to decode ones’ emotional state.
Thinking of potential uses, even your smart phone can soon know how you are feeling at any given moment. Scary or exciting?
