Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova want to be part of the European Union
The desire of Ukraine and its neighbours Georgia and Moldova to join the EU is not new.
Until June 2017 when Ukraine managed to secure visa-free entrance to Europe for its citizens, it seemed unlikely even to locals, but once this happened, everyone got used to that pretty quickly. Now the country wants to join as a member within the next decade.
Georgia and Moldova joined Ukraine is developing a common strategic vision of integration to Europe, Ukrinform reported. The initiative is called “The Eastern Partnership” and outlines the goals for the foreseeable future to achieve “closer political, economic and sectoral rapprochement with the EU”.
This will include deepening of cooperation in security, as well as in the areas of transport, energy, digital marker, and healthcare.
The 6th Eastern Partnership Summit is scheduled for March 2021. The agenda of the Eastern Partnership deals with things like visa agreements, free trade deals and strategic agreements. The Partnerships deals with the issues of economics, rather than politics, and was launched in 2009.
Currently 27 members of the EU participate in the Partnerships, along with 6 former Soviet Union republics: Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
With the exception of Belarus, 5 countries of the Eastern Partnership participate in the Council of Europe and the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, which deal both with economical and political issues between the states and the EU.
