Young Russians are confident they can succeed in life based on own merits. The vast majority of respondents in a recent survey believe success is possible for a person in a certain area, based just on merits. Young Russians aged 18-24 are the most optimistic in this regard.
Sport, army, and science are the areas where it’s possible to succeed, Russians believe
A recent survey by WCIOM set to find out where people in Russia believe in possibility of success based on one’s merits, without connections.
86% of Russians believe it is possible. Among young Russians aged 18-24 this feeling is stronger: 97% of respondents believe it’s achievable.
The top-3 areas where it’s possible to succeed based on one’s own merits rather than connections are sport, military, and science.
- Sport: 86% (97% among the group 18-24)
- Military: 84% (18-24: 96%)
- Science and education: 82% (18-24: 92%)
The least probable areas of success without connection, in the view of Russian women and men, are politics (47%), government (51%), and Russian Orthodox Church (63%).
- When respondents were asked about their own ability to succeed without connection in certain areas, the most probable was getting a good education: 79%.
- Getting a good position and advancing in a career is viewed as possible by 66% of survey participants.
- Finding a prestigious job scored only 57% as a personal possibility.
Only 33% of participants believe they can get rich in Russia. 30% of respondents trust in a chance to be part of the elite of the society.
Starting an own business seems a likely possibility for 47% of participants.
What do Russians miss to succeed in life and climb the social ladder?
The survey also posed a question about what people feel they are lacking to achieve a higher social status.
- The lack of money remains the issue that the largest share of people (36%) point out to as the reason that stops them from getting ahead in life.
- 16% of respondents think they lack connections.
- 14% of people in the survey said they are lacking in the department of personal qualities (ambition, purposefulness, conscientiousness, etc.).
- 13% of users think that moving to another city or country would change their luck.
- 11% of respondents pointed to lack of education.
- 8% of people said they wished they had parents of a certain standing.
- 7% of respondents require a professional qualification to succeed.
- 4% of survey takers stated they would need a suitable marriage to succeed.
- 3% of participants think they lack youth or health to be successful.
At the same time, 17% of participants stated they are already successful and have achieved a high status in the society.
