About 240 days a year various public events take place in Moscow, and annually 65 million people visit the city. These facts were given by Sergey Cheremin, the head of Moscow’s department of international relations.
Yearly festivals such as “A Journey to Christmas”, “Moscow Spring A Cappella”, “Circle of Light”, and “Flower Jam” attract millions of people. Last year over than 23 million tourists visited the city. Foreigners have discovered Moscow for themselves, so each year more guests are expected.
The need for budget accommodation in Moscow
An obvious point is that the Russian capital needs more hotels of the middle price segment.
As stated by Tim Ettelt, Hilton Worldwide‘s manager for Russia and CIS, “This will be a short-term goal of the Moscow hotel business: to respond to this demand by creating more budget hotels in the capital”.
Well, Hilton is far from budget-priced. Who is is to provide such accommodation? We have reported previously that many budget hostels in the Russian capital will be soon closing, as they are located in residential buildings, and the new recently adopted regulation doesn’t allow such placements, because of their impact on the residents.
Ettelt believes that low-cost hotels will eventually replace popular service Airbnb that offers Moscow visitors accommodation in the private sector.
According to experts, the recent ban on hostels in residential buildings would create for budget hotels a fertile soil to win Moscow’s accommodation market.
Such hotels will be created on the basis of well-known brands that see a great opportunity in this price sector.
“This will be our way to satisfy an increasing demand for chipper hospitality facilities in Moscow”, Ettelt pointed out.
Hilton to offer $10 per night beds? What is the definition of “budget”?
While individual and group tourism to Moscow is getting more and more popular, business travel is still in its infancy. According to Ettelt, foreign businessmen experience difficulties on their way to obtain business visas to Russia, so international conferences and seminars held in Moscow struggle to get attendees from abroad.
Besides, the majority of Moscow hotels lack spacious venues that could fit 1,000 people or more. This is why it is so important to build new modern hotels, Hilton’s manager pointed out.

Indeed, Moscow is an attractive city for foreign tourists. The French are very eager to visit Moscow. There are different possibilites of accomodation. The last time I stayed in the complexe Izmailovo which is well-situated and not far from the Red Square by metro. But there are too much Asian tourists in this hotel, as in many others. European tourists are shoked with their bad education and noise. The Bolshoi is a popular attraction, but many European tourists can’t afford it : the prices for foreigners are too high.
