You probably know that Russian Orthodox Christmas is celebrated on 7th of January and not 25 December.
The reason for that is in a different calendar that Russian Orthodox Church pervasively uses to calculate the dates of religious holidays.
How it happened that Russian Christians celebrate Christmas in January
The whole thing arose after the Bolshevik’s government of Russia changed the dates to synchronize the calendar with the rest of Europe. The old Julian calendar was replaced by the more precise Gregorian calendar in February 1918.
But the Russian church saw it as another step by the hostile anti-religious government to limit its power, so it never switched. As the result, Russians celebrate Christmas on 7 January instead of 25 December — 13 days behind the rest of the western world.
