Russian people used to be atheists during the time of the Soviet Union, but now they are rather religious. A lot of Russians belong to Christian Orthodox Church, and a large part of the population of the country are Muslims (Tatar, Bashkir, Chechen, and other nations).
In 21 century Russians grew rather religious
Religion got the ultimate stamp of approval from the state, even the communists who were members of the party during the times of the USSR and remained loyal to the ideology, they are now going to church and participate in all services. It would be a total scandal during the times of the USSR when being religious would destroy a person’s life and career.
Today most Russian women and the larger part of men consider themselves part of religion and participate in practices, at least occasionally.
Recently the top church official of the Orthodox Church stated that there are 3 new cathedrals erected in Russia every day. Well, it’s the largest country in the world, so there is enough space to build them!
While in western countries people tend to practice religion less than 30 years ago, in the republics of the former USSR the dynamics is the opposite.
In 1990s Christianity and Islam were seen as a breath of fresh air, after the many years of the atheism being the directive of the communist party ruling the country. So, people from the ex-USSR embraced religions of their great-grandparents in the wake of the freedom spirit.
