It’s not entirely politically correct in today’s world to discuss differences between people of different nationalities, and questions like these can get you banned on some social media platforms.

So, let’s talk about societal and cultural values of Russia and The United States of America.

People’s values differ depending on where they live

Even within the great American states, there are some that are known as liberal and others that tend to be conservative. Some people value certain things that other don’t recognize as important.

There are distinct differences between people living in New York and Los Angeles, and even larger differences between people who live in one of these cities and in rural Texas or Alabama, for instance. You won’t be surprised to find out that people behave differently in different cities of the same country, even though the basic values of people within the same nation are rather similar.

This is why it’s unsurprising that the cultural code varies from one country to another greatly, just as there are variances in values of people depending whether they live in a small town or in a capital.

The USA vs. Russia

As a country, the USA has a long history of democracy and fighting for freedom. Upholding the country’s Constitution is one of the greatest values of American people as a nation.

Russia, on the other hand, had been under dictators for the last century, with a short period of 1990-2000 when there wasn’t a strong authoritative ruler who wasn’t going anywhere. The rest of the time, democracy was a beautiful word that had nothing with the reality of life in the USSR and then Russian Federation. Thus the traditions and customs of the country are highly dependent on what the ruler decides to make the country’s values.

Soviets wanted equality of men and women and forced it from the day 1. The new Russian paradigm that started in the year 2000 was to appeal to “traditional family values” typical of the Tsar’s times: Women’s duty is to be married and take care of kids and the household, while men should work and provide for the family (a very similar cultural outlook exists in modern Muslim countries).

This is why Russian women who married foreigners in 1990’s were oriented towards an equal partnership, while ladies of today seek someone who is definitely a leader and a provider. It’s a shift in the country’s cultural paradigm over the last 20 years.

What is different between the views on relationships in Russia and Northern America?

• In Russia, there are not enough men for all women: 86 men for 100 women. (In the USA, gender proportions are basically equal until the age 55+.) This is why in Russia women tend to be extremely loyal and forgiving of partner’s shortcomings or actions, since it’s hard (if not impossible) to replace a partner. By comparison, if there is no lack of men, it’s relatively easy to replace a partner, thus ladies tend to be less inclined on keeping a partnership that doesn’t satisfy them 100%.
• In Russia, women’s happiness is believed to be in their families. A single lady is looked at with pity, as if she were deficient (no one chose to marry her). In the USA, many women don’t even want to be married and happy to change partners often or stay single by choice. In Russia, this is hard to imagine, as all women want to be officially married, not only to secure they have a partner but also due to cultural beliefs that view cohabitation or frequent change of partners immoral.

These major differences come from societal values and are deeply rooted, to the level of subconsciousness. Ladies who live and had been brought up in Russia cannot even imagine that a woman may not wish to be married with several kids but could prefer to stay single by choice.

The view on such a woman would be similar to how people view someone who never had a job but lives on government’s subsidy: Yes, you can live like this and survive, but is it life? How can you not want to work and earn good money? In a similar way people in Russia look at single women, as if there is something wrong with them.

From this point of view, marriage for a woman is extremely valuable. (A man can be single, it’s his choice and it’s OK, as his duty is to earn money, this is where a man’s happiness is, as Russians see it.)

This high value of a lifetime partnership is always paramount to understanding life principles and goals of females who were raised in Russia. Even if she says something that contradicts this, it’s likely to be just a bravado and deep in her heart she wants to be married with kids.
