Russians think their language is very hard to learn, this is why they are highly impressed when someone utters a phrase in their native tongue.
Most foreigners don’t feel the urge to learn some Russian, even if they are dating a lady who was born in Russia. Why bother if she can speak English?
As you may know, all Russians have to learn a foreign language at school for 6 years and then if they attend college or university, it’s another 5 years of compulsory studies. Most commonly students learn English. Sometimes it can be French, German, Italian, or Spanish, but these languages are not as commonly taught at schools in Russia.
So, yes, she probably can speak English, even if it’s not perfect.
Should you still learn Russian? Absolutely!
If you want to impress her and earn her respect, as well as be seen as respectful of her cultural heritage, then learn a few phrases.
- Privet (Hi)
- Poka (Bye)
- Kak dila? (How are you?)
- Atlichna (Excellent) — in response to the previous question
- Dila atlichna kak abychna (I am doing excellent, as usual) — a rhyming joke in response to the question #3, which is guaranteed have her laughing in stitches.
- Ty takaya krasivaya (You are so beautiful) — a compliment
- Kak nastraenie? (How’s your mood?) — a typical question similar to “How are you?” in Russia.
- Nastraenie super (My mood’s is superb) — a good answer to the question #7.
- Davaj pozhenimsya (Let’s get married) — that’s the name of a popular TV show in Russia; if you say this phrase, she will be definitely laughing.
- Kanezhna, siriozna! (Of course, I am serious!) — If you tell her the phrase #9, she will probably ask if you are serious or kidding. Tell her “kaneshna, siriozna!” to confuse her even further. (Do it only as a joke, to propose properly, you use different phrases.)
