Public opinion research centre Levada.ru asked Russian respondents whether they prefer Donald Trump over Joe Biden, from the point of view of what would be the best for Russia. There is a slight preference towards Trump over Biden as the winner, but overall the majority of people think it doesn’t matter.
Do Russians prefer Biden or Trump as the president?
In November 2016, Levada’s poll showed that 60% of Russians wanted Donald Trump to win as opposed to 5% of local who hoped that Hillary Clinton would become the President of United States. At the time, 15% of Russian respondents were carefully monitoring the presidential campaign, while 76% of participants said they heard something about it. Only 9% of users stated they never heard about the campaign and who were the contestants.
In 2020 the interest is lower. Only 11% monitor the presidential elections in the USA and 51% of participants heard something about it. This year 36% of users stated they haven’t heard anything about the election campaign in the USA (4 times more than in 2016).
This may explain the low interest in the outcome of the American elections. 65% of 2 out of 3 participants believe it doesn’t matter who wins, from the point of view of Russia’s interests, while further 10% of users found it difficult to answer.
From those who have an opinion about the results, only 9% believe that Joe Biden’s victory is in Russia’s interests, while President Trump’s re-election is seen as beneficial by 16%.
All in all, only 1 in 4 respondents believes that election of one of the presidential candidates could be preferable to Russia’s interests in some way.
