In 2020 over half a million of students in Russia will study in universities free of charge, with an addition of 30 thousand “budget” placements.
Half a million Russian students won’t pay for their university studies in 2020
During the times of the USSR all education in Russia was free, including universities. Students were getting a stipend as well, if they passed the exams with good marks. The size of the stipend was nearly half of the minimum wage in the country.
This system was changed after the dissolution of the USSR. Universities started to accept students on the “contract” basis (paid) as opposed to “budget” (free). The number of budget placements had been dropping with the number of contract students growing.
However, there are still a lot of students who study in Russia free of charge.
In 2020, over 30 thousand new “budget” placements had been added, AIF.ru reported.
Altogether, 525,663 student will be able to study free of charge in 2020. Once a student is accepted on the “budget” placement, this means he or she never has to pay a fee for studying in the university.
- From the total number of placements, 303,776 students will be enrolled in bachelor degree programs.
- Nearly 76 thousand will be learning a specialty.
Most additional placements are added in regional universities, with only a small share in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
There is a plan to increase the number of free university places available for students with every year.
