Brainwashed while you sleep
As you fall asleep tonight, you will be literally brainwashed, and it happens every night.
Once you are asleep, the brain’s neurons go quiet, then the blood flows out and the waves of the spinal liquid are entering the brain tissues.
Scientists knew for a long time that there is activity in the brain during sleep. Now they discovered that there are waves in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) as well.
The research team was able to make pictures of how the spinal liquid gets in and out of the brain during sleep.
One of the authors, Laura Lewis, assistant professor of biomedical engineering from Boston University, believes this discovery can path the way to deciphering diseases associated with broken sleep patterns, such as autism and Alzheimer’s, as well as aging.
Potentially, the decline in memory abilities is caused by toxic proteins in the brain, which are not flushed during the sleep, due to fewer slow waves generated.
The age of study participants was between 23 and 33, so Lewis plans to engage people from other age groups, to be able to see differences in sleep patterns and waves of CSF.
The people had to manage to fall asleep inside the MRI machine, wearing special caps full of smart machinery, to record the waves and the brain activity. It has proven to be a hard task, sleeping in such a weird environment.
The brain’s patterns change dramatically when a person falls asleep, instantly visible in imaging. It’s possible to say whether the person is already sleeping or not, just looking at pictures.
Researchers think that when the person is asleep, there is no need for so much oxygen in the brain, so the blood flows out, and the spinal liquid enters to maintain the pressure. But the whole mechanics is yet 100% clear.
One thing for sure: We are now confident about that brainwashing while we sleep. It really happens!
