Russia is officially the largest country in the world by its land size. It is about 17.1 million square km in size (6.6 million square miles) in total, with the land area of over 16.1 million square km (6.3 million square miles).
Russia covers 11% of the world’s land mass
However, Russia is only one of 15 republics of the Soviet Union, the country, which united several national republics since 1922.
The USSR broke down into the individual countries in 1991, following Perestroika, the process of reforms that began in 1985. Over 50% of Russians still feel fondness about the times of the USSR, a recent survey uncovered.
Russia is intercontinental
It lies in both Asia and Europe. The largest part of the European continent is in Russia. (The second largest country of Europe is Ukraine.)
The size of the European part of Russia is nearly 4 million square km (1.5 million square miles).
Although the Asian part of Russia is way larger in size, the majority of Russians live in Europe: 110 million out of 146 million.
The rest of Russian population and territory is in Asia.
The climate of Russia is extremely diverse
Contrary to the popular belief, it’s not always cold in Russia, and not everywhere it’s snowing in winter. Because of its sheer size, there are zones from subtropics on the Black Sea to the zones of permanent frosting in Siberia.
Yakutia, which is in Siberia, is officially the coldest inhibited place on Earth, with temperatures below minus 60 Centigrade recorded in recent history. When the temperatures go that low, a pot of boiling water freezes in the air, if splashed.
