People who fail at first may have an advantage over those who succeeded straight away, a recent study discovered.
Failure breeds success
The common wisdom holds that success breeds success (the Matthew Effect), but a recent study points out that it may not be true.
If you just barely made it as compared to people who just narrowly missed out, you are less likely to be successful in the long run, American researchers have proven.
The group led by Yang Wang from Northwestern University, USA, checked the results of scientists who got research grants by barely scoring the required points and the ones who didn’t get the funding because they were a few points too low on scores.
Surprisingly, the ones who missed out published in the future more hit papers and got cited more widely than the ones who got the funding without too much trouble.
It is even more surprising, since even having the money to advance their work wasn’t enough of a factor to get further in the field of their research than the losers, who didn’t get the funds. The “losers” managed to be 6.1% more successful in the long run in terms of publishing hit papers and being quoted by other authors.
The loss in seeking funding did affect the losers: This group had 10% higher exit rate. In other words, 10% more scientists among the “losing” group exited the field of science altogether, as compared to the “lucky” group that got the funding.
But the ones who didn’t quit, were more successful in advancing their careers.
It doesn’t mean that the famous Matthew Effect isn’t working. It’s great to succeed. However, if you stick it out after a failure, you may score even higher than the ones who got lucky straight away.
