Scientists from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and the Columbia Aging Center discovered that men who have a stronger grip tend to be married more often as compared to the guys with weaker handshakes. However, this finding does no apply to women. The strength of ladies’ grip was in no way connected with their marital status.

Why men with stronger handshake are more attractive to women

Earlier it was scientifically proven that a man’s grip is closely related to one’s ability to cope independently. Based on hese findings, one’s risk of cardiovascular diseases and mortality can also be predicted, Science Daily reports.

“Our results hint that women may be favoring partners who signal strength and vigor when they marry. If longer-lived women marry healthier men, then both may avoid or defer the role of caregiver, while less healthy men remain unmarried and must look elsewhere for assistance,” explained Vegard Skirbekk, PhD, professor, Columbia Aging Center and Mailman School professor of Population and Family Health.

The researches used data of 5 thousand Norwegian adults in the study. All of them were divided into 2 groups: the ones born 1923-1935 and 1936-1948. The idea was to determine whether respondents’ marital status could be linked to their grip strength. All the people involved in the research were aged 59 to 71 and the data was later matched with the Norwegian national death registry.

To access one’s handgrip strength professors used a device called vigorimeter that asks participants to squeeze a rubber balloon.

Examining one’s grip strength may help the person get to know more about health risks for heart disease and factures, physical mobility, the capacity to be socially active and healthy, and to enjoy a good quality of life. For married people it also includes enjoying the love of your spouse.

“In recent decades, women are less dependent on men economically. At the same time, men have a growing ‘health dependence’ on women,” Skirbekk pointed out. The scientist added that many men with a weak grip, which reflects their poor health, live alone, therefore they lack attention given to a partner by a spouse.

Housing arrangements that encourage social interaction can be of a great help for such people. They need to be better prepared for the old age and taught to avoid negative health consequences of independent living.

Get married to stay healthy and live longer

The research, however, doesn’t answer the question whether a weaker handshake is the reason or the result of being married. It may be that the health situation of an individual is the result of having a stable partner, which would point out on the reverse link: Married men tend to have a stronger handshake (because they are healthier), as opposed to the ones living alone, who are less agile and therefore have a weaker grip. This would fall in line with the previous research about singlehood nicely.

It’s another research, which indirectly points out to the benefit of being married.
