Our lives are a series of choices we make while resolving various tasks. The quality of our choices determine the quality of our lives. So far, so good. But how do we become good at making decisions while choosing between several options? Is it even possible?
A recent research by American scientists discovered the critical pattern that’s vital to making effective choices.
How effective puzzle-takers solve difficult tasks
Picking the right solution from the start isn’t always possible, so we have to go back and start all over. This rule works in solving difficult puzzles as well as managing tasks in our everyday life.
Scientists from the University of Washington set to research the patterns in how people who are successful in solving puzzles operate and which strategies produced the best outcomes.
In essence, our mind uses 2 parallel systems of operation, which work independently: One that pushes us towards options that bring positive results and the second one that moves us away from things that don’t work. But most often we have no idea how we make the decision and what helps us to achieve the best results.
“Because these processes are happening beneath the hood, you’re not necessarily aware of how much driving one or the other is doing,” said psychologist Chantel Prat, one of the study authors.
Researchers ran 3 series of experiments involving 200 participants as well as developed a computer model of excellence in solving the type of tasks offered in the tests.
The first round included solving puzzles with pen and paper, while the second one offered the same tasks in a computer version. In the third round people’s brains were scanned during solving puzzles on a computer, to see which regions of the brain were active: The ones responsible to “choosing the best” or “avoiding the worst”.
In all stages, from computer modelling to monitoring real people solving difficult tasks, the option of avoiding the worst options had been coming up as the critical part. The best puzzle-solvers were great at staying away from the worst options. The part of choosing the best hadn’t been proven essential to solve the task.
You have to not only be great at making the right choices, but even more essentially, proficient in staying away from bad ones
The complex task of finding a suitable life partner, especially if you decided to look internationally, can be definitely defined as a complex and rather difficult task.
If we accept the finding that staying away from bad decisions is even more critical than being able to pick the right ones, then knowing what to avoid in your search is more critical than anything else.
