About 5 million tourists are expected to visit Kiev (Kyiv) in 2019. Although it’s quite a high number, it’s less than a quarter of what Moscow, Russia, is achieving currently in terms of tourism.
5,000,000 tourists to visit Kyiv in 2019
Marina Khonda, the deputy head of the Kiev’s city administration, believes that the number of tourists to the city in 2019 will achieve 5 million people, Finance.ua reported.
The administrator announced during a recent press-conference that in 2018 the capital of Ukraine accepted 4 million tourists, and this year the city is likely to welcome 5 million travellers.
Among one of the reasons Khonda mentioned the popularity of the recent series “Chernobyl”, which brought more attention to the exclusion zone surrounding the place of the massive nuclear accident in April 1986.
Khonda pointed out that the number of requests for filming permits in Kiev jumped 5 times since 2014. The city administration used to get 200-300 applications, but now there are about 1,000 requests per year to allow filming videos and movies. The administration had already received 850 requests for filming permits by 1 September 2019. 70% of them had been filed by foreign production companies.
Tourism in Kyiv
Tourists usually spend 4-7 days in the Ukrainian capital, Marina Radova from the Department of Tourism reported.
In 2019, one million foreigners and nearly 1.5 million of local travellers visited Kiev in the first 6 months of the year.
The majority of the international travellers hold passports of Israel, USA, Belarus, Germany, France, Turkey, Georgia (the country), and Azerbaijan. Most of the visitors arrive to see family members. There are also many tourists who come to see the country, as well as visitors to festivals and events such as sport games. There are also many people who come on a business trip.
Visiting Ukraine doesn’t require a visa for citizens of the countries of the European Union and the USA. Residents of the majority of other developed countries are able to obtain visas on arrival at the airport.
Ukrainian women and men are able to travel to the countries of the European Union without visas since June 2017. The move to the visa-waiver regime for visitors also sparked work migration to Europe, where wages in nearby countries are 2-3 times higher than in Ukraine. Currently, the average wage of a Ukrainian employee is only USD 430 per month.
