September is the time when the new study year begins in countries of the post-USSR republics, including Belarus. You may be surprised to find out that Belarus attracts a lot of foreign students who come to get a degree. Prices for foreign students are higher than for locals, but they are still much more affordable than a comparable degree in other destinations.
How much do Belarusian students pay to study?
The cost of education
Belarus internet portal TUT.BY compared tuition costs at leading universities of the country for the 2019-2020 academic year.
- According to the survey, the highest fees are charged by The Belarusian State University in Minsk, which is also the most prolific place to study in the country, and the State University of Informatics that trains future programmers.
- Belarusian State University of Economics offers the cheapest option to get a degree in Minsk.
1. Belarusian State University: from 2,636 to 4,183 Belarusian roubles (USD 1,290 – 2,048)
Full-time students of BSU enrolled at the Law, Economics and International Relations faculties pay the highest yearly fees: From 3,642 to 4,183 Belarusian rouble (USD 1,783 – 2,048).
The list of price record-breakers also includes the tuition fees for the Eastern Philology Course where the first year of studies comes to BYN 4,091 (USD 2,003).
Philology Department and the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences have the most affordable charges. For example, Social Work and Philology (Belarusian and Russian Philology) students pay BYN 2,636 (USD 1,290) for their first academic year. For comparison, those who are going to start their studies at Physics, Mechanics and Chemistry faculties will be charged BYN 2,994 (USD 1,466).
The BSU correspondence courses’ students pay BYN 3,349 (USD 1639).
2. Belarus State Medical University: from 2,856 to 3,640 Belarusian roubles (USD 1,398 – 1,782)
The highest cost of study at the State Medical University will be for future dentists: BYN 3,640 (USD 1,782) for the first year.
They are followed by paediatric, pharmacy and physician undergraduates who pay BYN 3,113 (USD 1,524).
The third place in terms of fees is taken by the Faculty of Preventive Care, which charges its first course students BYN 2,856 (USD 1,398).
3. BNTU: from 3,380 to 3,605 Belarusian roubles (USD 1,655 – 1,765)
The first year of full-time learning at most faculties of the Belarusian National Technical University is priced at BYN 3,605 BYN (USD 1,765).
However, studies towards certain degrees such as “Economics and Organization of Production (Road Transport)” or “Economics and Organization of Production (Energy)” cost a bit cheaper: 3,380 Belarusian roubles (USD 1,655).
4. BSUIR: from 2300 to 3430 Belarusian roubles (USD 1,126 – 2,120)
Those who start their studies at the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radio Electronics pay 2,300 to 3,430 Belarusian roubles (USD 1,126 – 2,120).
The Faculty of Computer Systems and Networks charges the highest fees. However, students studying “Vocational Training (Computer Sciences)” fork out only 2,300 Belarusian roubles (USD 1,126).
The cost of BSUIR studies via correspondence is 1,220 Belarusian roubles (USD 597) per year.
5. Academy of Management of the President of Belarus: 3,200 Belarusian roubles (USD 1,566)
One year of full-time learning in the field of Business Administration (e.g. “State Business Administration and Law”) is sold to fresh undergraduates for 3,200 Belarusian roubles (USD 1,566).
Those who study at the Academy’s corresponding courses pay 1,400 Belarusian roubles (USD 685) for their 2019-2020 academic year.
6. BSUT: from 3,097 to 3,175 Belarusian roubles (USD 1,516 – 1,554)
The first year of study at the Belarusian State University of Technology ranges from BYN 3,097 to 3,175 (USD 1,516 – 1,554).
Students wishing to learn at BSUT “Information Technology Software” or “Design of electronic and web publications” are paying the highest fee for the current academic year.
BSUT correspondence students bear the expense of BYN 1,413 (USD 692).
BSUMT, MSLU and BSUE: from BYN 2,564 to 2,800 (USD 1,255 – 1,371)
Several popular universities charge similar annual fees.
- The cost of a year of study for freshman students at the Belarusian State University of Maxim Tank is from BYN 2,594 to 2,800 (USD 1255 – 1371). As an illustration, students involved in learning of Musical Art, Rhythm and Choreography pay BYN 2,800 (USD 1371); foreign language undergraduates – BYN 2,666 (USD 1,305).
- The freshman fee at the Minsk State Linguistic University is BYN 2,790 (USD 1,365) for full-time students, and BYN 1,070 (USD 524) – for correspondence students.
- Those who start their full-time studies at the Belarusian State University of Economics will foot the bill of BYN 2,564 (USD 1,255). And students leading by correspondence will pay BYN 907 (USD 444).
Is it cheap or expensive? University education is completely free in Germany (you still have to buy study books, of course, and live somewhere), which is not far, while offering degrees accepted through the whole of the European Union.
