Being entertaining is expected from a teacher in a class, researchers discovered. Students who are listening to lectures often engage in viewing digital content on their laptops and phones. Not always it’s the lesson’s material, but it can also be a YouTube video or even studying another subject.
Being responsible adults, as students see themselves, they feel entitled to do as they please in the course of getting the education they are paying for. To avoid a situation where students in class are distracted, lecturers should take care of their content and be entertaining, pupils believe.
“It’s not me, it’s you”
If the person you are talking to is drifting off, it’s your responsibility to capture their attention. Such is the view of students listening to lectures, scientists from the University of Waterloo, Canada, found out.
If a lecturer is boring, the listeners feel entitled to do as they please: Study another subject or even watch YouTube videos. It is the lecturer’s duty to engage them in the material, they feel.
Over 500 people took part in the study (478 student and 36 teachers) aimed to explore people’s attitudes to the use of laptops and phones during lectures.
The majority of students are using technology in classes to assist in learning the information.
- 49% of students found non-related to the lecture materials on other people’s laptops distracting.
- 9% complained about the course materials on other student’s screens being distracting.
- 32% of teachers were bothered by the use of laptops by students.
- 68% of teachers found the use of mobile phones by pupils distracting.
Professor Elena Neiterman, one of the study authors, pointed out that students took the view it was the teacher’s responsibility to ensure their engagement in the material.
While in fact, when students are using mobile phones and computers in class, it affects the teacher’s ability to lecture as well, as the study discovered.
