Israel won the title for the best song of 2018 and will be hosting 2019 Eurovision, despite the country not being within the official boundaries of Europe.
Eurovision travels outside Europe in 2019
The inclusion of non-European countries into the Eurovision singing contest had been questioned by some fans for a while, but now Israel, as well as Australia, are a constant fixture in the largest pop-song competition in the world.
This year Israel singer Netta (pictured) won the prize for the best song and for a while rumours had it that the next year competition may be held in Austria. However, it has been now confirmed that Eurovision is to take place in Israel. The country is geographically located in Asia, although it is a member of many cultural and sporting associations within Europe.
Jerusalem, Eilat, Haifa, or Tel-Aviv may be the host city of the contest in 2019.
Netta herself said after her victory, “Next year in Jerusalem”, but there may be other considerations. (The phrase itself is a memo.) However, Jerusalem already hosted the contest in 1979 and 1999.
Gal Gadot of Wonderwoman fame, a prominent Israeli model and actress, Miss Israel 2004, was offered to host 2019 festival but had to refuse due to former work arrangements. Gadot was a prominent supporter of the Israeli singer in Eurovision 2018 and excited about victory of 25-year-old Netta in May this year.
Usually the singing festival is broadcast during the second week of May, but 2019 happening may be scheduled for the third week on 14, 16 and 18 May. The official page states that it’s “still a guess”, so don’t book your tickets yet.
It may be due to some other events that happen that month (9 May is the Independence Day in Israel).
In 2016 Ukraine won Eurovision and hosted the festival in 2017.
