Most Ukrainians are going to spend as little as possible on gifts, with nearly 60% of respondents in a recent poll indicating they aren’t going to exceed the limit of 1000 hryvnia (USD 42).
Gifts for the whole family for under USD 42? That’s the plan!
The amount may not seem that small if you remember than the average monthly wage in Ukraine is just above 10,000 hryvnia (USD 425).
Spending 10% of their monthly income on presents isn’t that low as it might seem without taking in consideration the actual regular income. Of course, for this money one can only hope to buy some “symbolic” gifts, not something of value. 6 out of 10 Ukrainians stated this was their plan for gift-giving in 2019.
By the way, Ukrainians give presents to each other on the New Year’s Eve, not on Christmas, which is celebrated in Ukraine twice: on 25 December (western style) and 7 January (Orthodox style). Both dates are set as public holidays in Ukraine.
The second popular answer in the survey chosen by 15% of participants was to spend USD 43-85, due to the fact that the list of recipients was long, although the respondent planned to save as well.
The same share of people (15%) are planning to spend over USD 127 on presents.
10% of respondents indicated they would be spending up to USD 127, since it wouldn’t be possible to buy gifts for everyone for less.
